This Concord Deck Project involved transforming a plain and dull paved townhouse courtyard. It was full of weeds and uneven paving. We turned it into a sunlit decked outdoor entertaining area, with a Mediterranean feel. The perfect outdoor space for a BBQ and to entertain friends and family on the weekend
BACK YARD
The clients wanted to transform their dull and under used courtyard into a space perfect for afternoon entertaining. Their outdoor space was paved with old sandstone coloured concrete pavers that were old, aged and filled with weeds. It was also massively sloped and wasn’t comfortable to place a table for entertaining. The best way to give them a useable space was to construct a low level timber deck straight off their kitchen.
We built a low level timber frame constructed to Australian standards supported on galvanised steel posts. We clad the deck with natural Spotted Gum hardwood. It is durable and can withstand harsh climates. Spotted Gum was the perfect material, particularly as this deck was located on the western elevation.
The next issue was that their back fence was fairly low and bordered the neighbouring townhouse complex driveway. Rather then any hard structures being used to create a screen, we opted to plant the perimeter of the deck with Lilly Pilly’s. They grow super fast and would provide a thick screening to all neighbours. We also gave them the Mediterranean feel by planting an ornamental grape that would grow up and over an existing pergola frame.
