This Eastern Suburbs deck Project involved a number of different requirements. This was part of a strata insurance and remediation works that effected one of the lot owners. Aspen Landscaping was also engaged for additional works for their own requirements whilst the other works were being undertaken.
The major issue that occurred on this site was the failure of a large and very old crib retaining wall. it occurred during flooding and water run off during a major storm. The major wall was constructed by another civil firm. The wall was approx 3 metres tall and required civil contractors to construct this engineered wall. We were engaged to construct some low retaining walls to support some earth before the major works could proceed.
Works began by demolishing one small crib retaining wall which suffered from rot and saw the wall beginning to fail. Two sections of low height timber sleeper retaining walls to about 1 metre in height were then constructed. We set in place galvanised steel I-beams as post supports. This allowed for the supporting sleeper wall sections to slot in between the posts. Timber wall anchors were secured to the wall to ensure the wall was well anchored. We placed our behind wall drainage to ensure any water pressures behind the retaining wall would be relieved.
BACKYARD – DECK WORKS
Part of the remediation works allowed the lot owners to construct and extend their backyard. This was achieved through a canti-levered deck that extended over the high retaining wall. It took advantage of unused lot space below the retaining wall. We constructed a timber frame using hard, strong and durable hardwood. Using Hardwood also allowed us to extend our spans and reduce post numbers. The deck sat approximately 2.1-2.5 metres above the terraced garden/wall below. We covered the deck using Trex composite decking. It gives the clients a maintenance free entertaining and sitting area for them to enjoy their garden. The deck gives a perched view over a local park and taking in city views.
We also demolished an existing deck covering for the clients themselves. It was beginning to rot and looked under maintained and would not match all the new works taking place. We also used Trex composite decking to complete the deck renovation.
A fence was constructed o finish the landscaping works. It provided safety and secured the site from the large drop over the newly built walls and deck. The fence was installed using modular and pre-fabricated black aluminium garden fence panels. This allowed the fence to blend into the landscape beyond.
